Europe Needs the Carpathians and They Need Europe’s Attention

Last October in Strasbourg the Committee on the questions of steady development of the Congress of local and regional authorities of the European Council made decision: in March, 2009 on the example of the Carpathians region to discuss the ecological situation, its social consequences and ways of its improvement on all mountain territories of the European continent. And at the meeting of Regional association “The Carpathians European region” the representatives of organs of local self-government of boundary regions of five countries appealed to their governments with the suggestion to proclaim the year 2009 as the Year of the Carpathians.
Consequently, this year the Carpathians have a chance to get in the center of attention of the European Community.
We are conducting the conversation about how this event is significant for people who live in the Carpathians, for the Carpathian region and Ukraine on the whole with Mychaylo KICHKOVSKYI, the chairman of Zakarpatska regional board, the member of Ukrainian delegation in the Congress of local and regional authorities of the European Council.
