Mykolaiv region was formed on September 22, 1937. On the west it borders with Odessa region, on the north – with Kirovograd region, on the east and north-east – with Dnipropetrovsk region, on the southern east – with Kherson region and on the south is bounded by the waters of the Black Sea. The region is divided into 19 administrative-territorial districts.

The region has 9 cities, 5 of them are of regional significance (Mykolaiv, Voznesensk, Pervomaysk Yuzhnoukrainsk, Ochakiv), 17 urban-type village and over 900 villages. The regional center is Mykolaiv city. 1 million people lived in the region as of June, 1, 2011. 180, 4 thousand people are representatives of 133 nationalities.
